Two Israeli air strikes targeted southern parts of Beirut early on Sunday after the Israeli army ordered civilians to evacuate the area, state media said.
The targeted neighbourhoods include Haret Hreik and Hadath, according to the Israeli army.
“You are located near facilities and interests affiliated with Hezbollah, which the IDF will work against in the near future,” the military’s Arabic spokesman Avichay Adraee said on Telegram.
Dozens of villages and towns in Lebanon were also targeted on Sunday morning, specifically the surrounding areas of the southern city of Tyre, as well as the city of Nabatieh.
Lebanese state media said Israeli jets “conducted strikes” on more than 50 towns and villages including the border villages of Kfarshuba, Bint Jbeil and Khiam that have seen heavy fighting, reporting casualties.
The reported strikes came after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused Hezbollah of trying to assassinate him by attacking his residence – in an incident that resulted in no injuries or casualties on Saturday.
“Anyone who tries to harm Israel’s citizens will pay a heavy price,” he said in comments directed at Tehran and “its proxies”, which include Lebanon’s Hezbollah, a group Israel has been at war with since late September.
Hezbollah has not claimed responsibility for the attack.
Meanwhile, Gazans are still reeling from a vicious Israeli strike on the northern city of Beit Lahia, which killed at least 73 people, late on Saturday.
The strike was among the deadliest in recent weeks. Scores more are feared trapped under rubble, rescuers in Gaza said.
