Fierce battles between the Israeli army and Hamas fighters expanded further into Jabalia refugee camp in Gaza City on Monday while residents in the south reported heavy airstrikes in Rafah.
Civilian casualties have been reported in Rafah, where four people, including a child, were killed by an airstrike on a home in the Brazil neighbourhood and were rushed to the Kuwait Hospital, one of the few remaining medical centres in the area.
Thousands of Palestinians continue to move out of Rafah and set up shelters in Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis, where humanitarian groups have warned that conditions are insufficient to support people.
Meanwhile, late on Sunday US Secretary of State Antony Blinken repeated that Israel lacked a “credible plan” to protect some 1.4 million Palestinians sheltering in Rafah.
Blinken also said that Israel is risking “an insurgency” of Hamas fighters in its war in Gaza which has seen Israel claim to have defeated Palestinian fighters in the north only for them to regroup in the past week.
