A new poll of Muslim American voters released a week after the Democratic National Convention in Chicago shows Kamala Harris tied with Jill Stein for support in the community.

The poll, conducted by the Council on American-Islamic Relations, showed the Democratic candidate tied with the Green Party candidate at 29 percent each, followed by 11 percent for Republican candidate Donald Trump and 4 percent for Cornel West of the People’s Party, with most of the remainder undecided.

The results are significant, given the high level of support for Stein, who as a Green Party candidate has very little institutional support. Muslims’ continued disapproval in the Biden administration’s handling of Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza appears to remain a challenge for Harris.

“Our latest survey reveals that American Muslim voters are highly engaged in the upcoming presidential election, open to supporting a diverse range of candidates and political parties, and deeply dissatisfied with the current state of the nation, particularly US support for the war on Gaza,” CAIR’s national executive director Nihad Awad said in a public statement.

“The poll also shows that an unusually high number of American Muslims planning to vote for third party candidates. With over 2.5 million American Muslim voters eligible to turn out in November, including in key swing states, elected officials and political candidates should engage with their Muslim constituents in the coming weeks,” he said.

These numbers come from a poll of 2,850 Muslim voters between May and July, before President Joe Biden‘s withdrawal from the race, in addition to an August 25-27 presidential poll of more than 1,000 Muslim voters conducted after Vice President Harris accepted the Democratic nomination at the Democratic National Convention.
